Overview

Figure 8 is a superhero comedy web series that follows the adventures of a superhero who excels at protecting her city but struggles to manage her personal life. Over the six-episode first season of the show, she'll navigate a love triangle with the boy next door and her archnemesis, while also trying to protect her city and keep her identity safe.

The series was inspired by our love of both superhero movies and romantic comedies, combining the elements we love from both genres: the fight of good versus evil, love triangles, confronting fear, and self-discovery. We will see our heroine overcome these obstacles both as superhero Figure 8 and as her alter-ego, Margot. We want the audience to relate to the grounded and fantastical elements of our story: being a superhero is a dream come true, but like all aspects of life, it has its own challenges that take courage to overcome.

Representation

In researching for this project, we learned that female voices are still severely underrepresented in film and television. A few statistics about female representation from Women and Hollywood are listed below:

• Of the top 100 grossing films of 2018, women only represented: 4% of directors, 15% of writers, 3% of cinematographers, 18% of producers, and 14% of editors.

• For the 2017-2018 network TV season, women only accounted for 27% of all creators, directors, writers, producers, editors, and DPs working on broadcast, cable, and streaming programs.

• Only 14% of superhero and sci-fi films in wide release between 2009-2018 had female solo leads.

• Women only held 12% of all directing, writing, producing, and editing roles for superhero and sci-fi films in wide release between 2009-2018.

We want to implement change in the industry from the ground up to create a more inclusive place for storytelling. In order to help accomplish this, we are striving to hire as many diverse female crewmembers as possible.
